Jamaican Emancipation and Independence Recognition Events
at Penrhyn Castle and Bangor's Civic Hall /Penrhyn Hall
and on Zoom 1st - 6th August 2025

On Emancipation Day Friday 1st August at 11.00am event at Penrhyn Castle in the Stables Community Room for members of the North Wales Jamaica Society to call the names and remember some of the thousands of Africans enslaved and working on plantations owned by the Welsh Pennant family in Jamaica.
This event will showcase the 'NWJS Fi Wi Laif' project which is exploring the lives of these enslaved workers through the documentation held in Bangor Archives and the claims for the value of each person, men, women and children, held at the National Archives in Kew.
We had hoped to be Penrhyn Hall, Bangor later in the day but are having to cancel this!

Saturday 2nd August 2pm - 3.30pm we will be joined by friends from Jamaica on Zoom for our regular NWJS open meeting when we are planning a quiz and other fun activities. Ask for link details through 'Contact Us'

On Tuesday 5th August from 6.00pm - 8.00pm at Penrhyn Hall - we will be joined by guests including the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Gwynedd and NWJS Members who are taking part in the Taith 'Building Bridges of Friendship' Project who will be sharing stories of the exchange visits held so far - with links on Zoom at 7pm with our Jamaican partners. On Jamaican Independence Day Wednesday 6th August at Penrhyn Hall, will be an informal day from 11.00am to 4.00pm with snacks - free drop in session - with Family Fun! We will have music, dominoes, quizzes and information about our activities.
